Work from home like a boss!

Mar 26, 2020

With lock down in full effect are you one of the many that are learning how to work from home?

The COVID-19 pandemic is the only thing that the world is talking about at the moment, and with New Zealand heading into the alert level 4 lockdown there will be some big changes for kiwis over the next few months.

For a lot of people there has never been the option to work remotely or from home and the idea of setting up a home office is completely alien to you.  However, working from home can offer some great advantages such as the flexibility of setting your own schedule, no daily commute and saving time and money if you are self employed.

This transition to working from home can be made even more difficult if you are a parent and your  kids are at home with you too!  So we are bringing you some top tips and ideas of how to set up your workspace with the right equipment to be a productive and creative space.

Figure out what you need

This step really depends on what it is that you do.  If all you need is an area for your computer, phone and printer then you may just need a desk and small amount of storage space.   If you are a graphic artist or designer my may need a small desk for your computer and a larger table or work space for your art work.  You will also need to think about additional file cabinets or storage space for office documents and supplies.

Many small businesses owners choose to start out with a home office but will need additional space to store products and inventory or for props and lighting equipment for their product photos.

No matter what your work involves, one of our top tips is to get yourself a standing desk. This type of adjustable desk means you can work both sitting and standing. Spending periods of time standing during your work day can have some great heath benefits such as reducing weight gain, it can relieve back pain and has been found to help reduce blood presser and the risk of heart disease.

Lighting is important!

Having lots of bright natural light in your workspace is so important!  When you are choosing where to set up your home office consider a space with windows near by.  Natural lighting from the sun gives you energy and can help increase your mood and creativity.  It will also  reduce headaches and eyestrain, allowing you to be more productive on a day-to-day basis and healthier in the long-term.

As well as having great health benefits natural light can help with video calls and online meetings.  Having poor lighting can make your online interactions look unprofessional.  However, remember not to have your window or any bright light behind you for this as your camera lens will struggle to find you in such a backlit frame.  Instead make sure that you are facing your window or light source for any video calls or recordings.
Research has shown that having plants in an office can improve both your productivity and make you happier while your work.  So get yourself a couple of nice houseplants for your desk.  If you were not blessed with green fingers or don't want the added responsibility of keeping plants alive then do a little research first.  There are some great low maintenance plants or succulents that 'thrive on neglect' and are pretty cheap and easy to find and maintain.

Get smart with your storage

Now that you have figured out what you need for your home office and where it will be in your home there are some great ways to get creative with your storage space. You want to try and put together a clutter free area that you can be productive and comfortable in.  There are so many ways to do this but here are just a few ideas to get you thinking!

Tailor made shelves

Take some time to work out the best place for your shelving and what it is that you need to store.  Make sure you have looked through your items and get rid of or relocated anything that you don't need in your office.  Once you’ve done this, you should have an organised collection of items that need allocated storage.
Now you can work out how much shelving you need for each group of items, and the amount of room you require above each shelf.

Having custom shelving built means you can workout a structure that fits your requirements perfectly and there will be no wasted space.

'Cubby holes' and 'Nooks'

If space is an issue and you don't have a spare room that you can convert to your home office then you can create a cozy desk area by using storage units on on either side of your desk.  You could choose window in your home as the central area with cabinets either side to create a snug style work space.  Drawers and cupboards are ideal for stowing everything out of the way, while handy shelves are positioned within easy reach of the desk.
This type of work space is also great a great place to add handy shelves and 'cubby holes' for items that you want quick access to or use quite frequently.

Blend in with your living space

As we've mentioned above, not everyone is able to have a dedicated room for their home office and you may have to set it up in another room in the house such as the living room.
Just because you're office is now in the middle of the lounge it doesn't have to feel like it.  By choosing office furniture and storage that fits in with the existing space you can 'blend' your workspace in.

Alternatively you can get creative with this and choose furniture that is both functional and beautiful at the same time.  You could even turn your desk and home office area into something beautiful with feature shelving or pinned projects that you are working on or put up some show stopping artwork.
