Preparing for winter during lockdown

Apr 09, 2020

With New Zealand in lockdown and the colder months approaching,  its the perfect time to prepare for winter.

Although the sun is still shining we all know that winter is on its way and with many of us hanging out at home with some spare time on our hands its a great opportunity to get organised!  Here are our top tips and for organising and preparing your home.

Self storage wardrobe

Swap out your wardrobe

You may not think that you have a wardrobe for every season but if you take a good look at your clothes and when you wear them you'll see that all those summer shorts, dresses and shirts aren't going to get a lot of use over the next few months.  And unless you are lucky enough to have a giant walk in wardrobe and plenty of space, then it is worth having a system to swap out your seasonal clothes.   Instead of digging through a mountain of tops, jackets and summer skirts to find your go-to cozy sweatshirt, why not store them out of the way.  There are some great ways to organise your wardrobe: by season, occasion or even colour and design it really depends on you.

If you have a self storage unit you may even want to move your seasonal wardrobe there if you have a big family and are organising clothes for the kids too.

Get the winter sheets ready

To get ready for the colder nights, you'll need to dig your cozy winter sheets and duvet out of storage.
If you don't already have them then get online and order some nice flannel or jersey bed sheets and air out your winter duvet if you have had it boxed up for a few months before putting on your bed.

If you are in Lockdown and looking for something to do, you could try your hand at sewing or knitting and make yourself a cozy blanket to curl up under on the sofa!

Do you BBQ in winter

Over the summer many Kiwis will use the BBQ for almost every meal they cook.  BBQ pizza is one of our favourites!  But as we head into the cold months of winter, the BBQ doesn't get as much use, if any at all!
If you don't already have one then you will want to invest in a good quality cover for it and if possible try to move and store it somewhere secure.  If you also have outdoor patio furniture you will want to get this packed away too.

The last thing you'll want to deal with when summer rolls around is a rusty BBQ and mouldy outdoor furniture!
The best place for this is somewhere dry and indoors like your garage or shed.
If you don’t have the space around your house then you could rent a storage unit for a few months, short term storage units are likely to be much cheaper than buying new grill!

One room at a time...

In the same way you would with your wardrobe and bedroom, work through your home one room at a time and pack away, throw away or donate all the unnecessary items in your home so you are only left with the things you love and the things you need!   One tip for not letting things pile up is for every new item you bring into the home, remove one or two things by discarding or donating them.

It could be an idea to start in the garage and shed before you get to work on the house,  you could find or create some much needed storage space that you can use for keeping seasonal items like your garden furniture or sports and hobby equipment.
Its worth investing in quality storage containers for the items you are packing away and for the things your holding onto. Look for some stylish baskets for the kids toys and games, and shelving or cabinets for those books, DVDs, and sentimental things you want to display or hide away!

Stay organised & Develop good habits

Now that you have spent the time getting your house in order its time to start developing some good habits to keep it that way!

The best way to keep on top of clutter is to not let it pile up.  We have all been guilty of having the 'i'll do that later' attitude, however unless you get strict with yourself you may find that you fall behind.   All your hard work getting the house clean the the home office tidy will have been for nothing!

Try implementing these daily habits to stay on top of the mess and keep your house clean and clutter free.

  • Keep the dishwasher empty.
  • Clean the dishes after dinner.
  • Put clothes away as you take them off or as you take them out of the dryer.
  • Wipe off bathroom and kitchen counters before you leave the room.  Clear the kitchen counter before bed.
  • Take belongings to their rightful locations, rather than letting them pile up on surfaces.
  • Recycle unnecessary mail right away.
  • Reset your desk to order at the end of every day.
  • Hang your coat and bags up as soon as you get home.
  • Tidy up a cluttered surface while you talk on the phone.
