Pet Storage: Top storage tips to organise your pets like a pro

Organising and storing all your pet gear is just as important and as easy as organising your own gear.

If you ask most pet owners they will tell you that a pet very quickly becomes a part of the family. Best friend, fur baby, guard dog, and the list doesn't end there. Pet come in all shapes and sizes and with that their needs and accessories come too.

And while you're busy training your new puppy to do cute tricks its easy to miss the toys and pet paraphernalia taking over the house! These tips will help to stop your house getting taken over by toys and pet supplies and keep your home safe and tidy.

First things first, you'll need to get all your pet supplies in one place. Next you are going to go through everything and make two piles: Things to keep and things to chuck out. (You might have to be strict with yourself for this step).

It's time to get rid of any objects that are broken or you don't need or use anymore such as old leashes and toys that are broken.

You could donate anything that is still in good condition like grooming supplies or toys to a local animal shelter or thrift store.

Now you know how much you need to organise, its time to decide if you want everything in one place with a dedicated shelf or draw or if it would be better to set up pet stations around the house.

Food and Treat Storage

Keep dry food/birdseed in a cool dry area and in well sealed containers.

Store Treats in Mason Jars so they are easy to get to.

It is also a good idea to keep bags of food off the floor to prevent any possible pests or critters from getting into it.

Many pet owners opt to transfer larger bags of pet food into plastic or metal storage containers. This helps to keep food fresh and safe from pests.

Canned food

Before open you can keep canned food in the pantry or even garage if you are short on space in the house. But once open, cans should be kept in the fridge to keep it from drying out.

Use a can lid or clingfilm to stop everything in your fridge from smelling like cat food!

Toy Storage

Store toys are in an open basket or storage box. This can double up as a great game of hide and seek for your dog! Hide their favourite toys in the bottom so they can dig for them.

When it comes to cat toy storage, you might want to choose something with a lid. Open baskets or boxes will most likely turn into an 'if it fits i sits' situation. If your cat can sit in it then he will! All cats do – but isn’t that why we love them?

Remember though, that like kids, With open storage options pets will happily pull out all their toys to play with so it may end up with you spending more time tidying up. A top tip here is to find a container that is easy for you to refill or,

with and a little time and patience, you could even train your pup to put them away for you!

It is good practice to wash toys occasionally to keep them clean and in good condition.

If you do your own grooming then no doubt you have a good collection of pet shampoo and conditioners, brushes, hair and nail clippers and other supplies.

Christchurch, or Ōtautahi is known throughout New Zealand as the 'The garden city". It is one of the 3 largest cities in the country and has taken pride of place as the de facto capital city of the South Island. First a little bit of history...

It would be impossible to talk about Christchurch without bringing up the 2011 earthquake. Set in an area know as the "pacific ring of fire" Christchurch is no stranger to seismic activity and in February 2011 the Canterbury region was struck by magnitude 6.3 earthquake that destroyed much of the central urban areas of Christchurch.

As devastating as it was, the new city with its reinforced buildings, beautiful public art spaces and a diverse new array of alternatives to typical infrastructure solutions has risen from the rubble as a shining example of triumph over adversity!

Community spirit and culture...

Overall the city has a distinctly English feel, but there is still a significant Maori influence on the cultural life of the city. As well as its green areas, parks and open spaces that earned its name 'the garden city' , residents of Christchurch enjoy its many art galleries and museums, including the world famous Christchurch Art Gallery .

Christchurch is also a key part of the New Zealand music scene, and is home to many bands, artists, and performers that fit in perfectly with the thriving cafe and bar and restaurant scene across the city.

Hagley Park is the 3rd biggest city park in the world behind Central Park in New York and Hyde Park, London.

The countdown to summer has begun and with it, kiwis across the country are getting ready for the warmer months, putting away ski jackets and chunky cozy scarves and sweatshirts and digging out their togs jandals.

Anyone short on space can find this challenging and will be all too familiar with struggle of the rotating wardrobe. So the question is where can you store it safely? In the garage, the attic, under the bed? We're bringing you some ideas on how to make the most of your space and make sure that when winter rolls back around that you winter wear is fresh and ready to go when you need it.

What is the best way to store winter clothes?

Using cardboard boxes might seem like a good idea for this job but for most situations we wouldn't recommend it. Yes, cardboard boxes are after all cheap, easy to come by and foldable for when you don't need them. However, for many your boxes of clothes may end up in the attic, garage or possibly a self storage unit with the rest of your winter gear.

You want to make sure that your boxes are going to be air tight and water tight but cardboard is often susceptible to water damage and in some cases it contains glue that can attract bugs and pests. so when winter rolls around you may find that your cozy winter ski jacket has a musty smell and is a little moth eaten!

Our top tip: Use clear plastic storage bins

And if you're really short on space then you can use plastic vacuum pack bags to store winter clothing under the bed or in out of the way cupboard space.

Store winter clothing inside sealed plastic storage boxes that will prevent water damage or damp.
You don't have to use clear bins however this way you can see what you’re storing and possibly find things you're looking for much easier.
Pack like clothes together and use a label maker to organize each bin by type. Categories for individual bins might include sweaters, coats, or accessories.

We know you'll be going through your wardrobe and not the dirty laundry basked however, even if they don’t look dirty, make it a point to clean your winter clothes before you store them.

Dirty clothes can deteriorate while they’re in storage because even subtle body oils on clothing can attract moths and also create an odor that can be nearly impossible to remove once months have passed

No matter where you store your clothes, there’s always a chance that things can start smelling a little musty over the warm summer months. Especially if you havn't done step one and washed everything!

A good tip is to include a few drops of lavender essential oil or dryer sheets inside of each container.

Cool and dry are the two more important factors for clothing storage, and ignoring either of these factors could end up with damaged and smelly clothing. Look for storage locations other than your garage or attic, these have regular temperature changes that can often be extreme.

Five common household items that REALLY don't like the cold...

When getting ready for any change in season there are so many things to remember! Spring and summer have us digging out our togs, prepping the boat, rods and waders for fishing season and getting a fresh wax on the surf board. Autumn brings with it a whole new set of things to prepare for winter! New Zealand temperatures and conditions can swing dramatically from season to season causing damage to outdoor and indoor tools and other common thing around the home.

This is where winterising comes into play! Preventing expensive equipment from freezing and corroding is a crucial part of preparing for the winter months ahead. We are bringing you a list of things to remember in your preparation for the months ahead.

Garden Hose

The garden hose is often overlooked in winter but can become damaged if any remaining liquid in hose freezes. Don’t assume that having a winter proof hose covering will protect from getting damaged. Its quick and easy to store it away and will save you the hassle and expense of buying a new one.

Detach it from the tap and remove any hose attachments/ sprinkler or spray gun.
Lay out your hose and make sure to untangle any knots or kinks in it.
Drain all the water out of it completely - most of the water should have drained as you were laying out.
When the water is completely drained, and you’ve straightened the hose completely, wind it into a circle and store inside your garage or storage unit.

Don’t forget to check the outside spigot of any remaining liquid that might freeze over. Use a dry washcloth and wipe opening.

Pressure Washer

A pressure washer is a very handy but often expensive piece of kit. They often get the most use in the spring and summer when everyone is preparing their outdoor space for a season of BBQs and garden parties or other outdoor odd jobs. Although some are electric, pressure washers are generally powered by an engine that runs on fuel. Something people don't know is that Gasoline can become stale if left unused for a long period of time and cause damage.

If you know that you wont be using your pressure washer over the winters then there are only a few easy step to take to prepare and store it correctly:

1. Flush the system of any liquids.

2. Place the injection tube into a bucket of clean water and run the pressure washer on low pressure.

3. If you’re storing your pressure washer for the winter be sure to do an anti-freeze flush too. Then, turn off the engine and the main water supply.

4. Turn the spray gun and squeeze the trigger to release trapped pressure and water.

5. Then, lock the trigger on your spray gun. Once the unit cools down, disconnect any attached garden hoses.

6. Drain the water from the hose, spray gun, and nozzle extension.

7. Make sure to wipe off the hose. When finally storing pressure washer, pull the recoil handle about six times to empty the pump of all liquids.

Flower pots

For most garden and plant owners, the lead up to winter is frantic. Preparing your much loved garden for the cold season is vital to its survival. Especially for those in the the south island of New Zealand where the winter frosts can be much harsher than up north. While delicate potted plants are brought inside and frost cloth is draped over trees, many overlook protecting their outdoor flower pots from the cold temperatures. Moisture can cause a ceramic flower pot to crack during the cold winter season. Glazed ceramic pots still tend to crack if moisture is in them.

If you don’t want to worry about protecting your flower pots from cracking you might want to invest in double glazed pots to make sure they hold up in cold weather. However, the double glazed pots tend to be the most expensive. If you have any doubts about what kind of flower pots you have and if they will survive the winter, store them in a climate controlled unit or garage to keep your pots away from the elements.

Paint Tins and Spray Cans

Water based paints should never be stored in your garage during the winter, because like water, they will freeze. Water based paints must be stored at room temperature or in a climate controlled storage unit to remain usable. Oil based paints will not freeze as easily but to make sure they stay in good condition, try storing them in a cupboard inside your home or in a climate controlled storage unit.

Spray paints, aerosol spray cleaners, or air fresheners do tend to freeze but are just fine once returned to room temperature. To prevent them freezing, keep that at room temperature inside your home for accessibility or in a climate controlled storage unit.

Preparing for winter during lockdown

With New Zealand in lockdown and the colder months approaching, its the perfect time to prepare for winter.

Although the sun is still shining we all know that winter is on its way and with many of us hanging out at home with some spare time on our hands its a great opportunity to get organised! Here are our top t ips and for organising and preparing your home.

Swap out your wardrobe

You may not think that you have a wardrobe for every season but if you take a good look at your clothes and when you wear them you'll see that all those summer shorts, dresses and shirts aren't going to get a lot of use over the next few months. And unless you are lucky enough to have a giant walk in wardrobe and plenty of space, then it is worth having a system to swap out your seasonal clothes. Instead of digging through a mountain of tops, jackets and summer skirts to find your go-to cozy sweatshirt, why not store them out of the way. There are some great ways to organise your wardrobe: by season, occasion or even colour and design it really depends on you.

If you have a self storage unit you may even want to move your seasonal wardrobe there if you have a big family and are organising clothes for the kids too.

Get the winter sheets ready

To get ready for the colder nights, you'll need to dig your cozy winter sheets and duvet out of storage.

The COVID-19 pandemic is the only thing that the world is talking about at the moment, and with New Zealand heading into the alert level 4 lockdown there will be some big changes for kiwis over the next few months.

This step really depends on what it is that you do. If all you need is an area for your computer, phone and printer then you may just need a desk and small amount of storage space. If you are a graphic artist or designer my may need a small desk for your computer and a larger table or work space for your art work. Take some time to work out the best place for your shelving and what it is that you need to store. Wether you're building and investing in a collection of valuable items or just for fun, collectables come in many different shapes and sizes! Heres our top 10 and how you should be storing them.

Over the years we have had some great tenants who's storage needs have varied from the very basic storage unit all the way to very specific requirements for their items. A storage unit is a great option for that collection that you have been building on for years and although it is taking over the house you just can't bear to part with it! Choosing to keep collectables in storage can be daunting and feel like a gamble but if you're not ready to sell then it is one that will certainly pay off!

Although many items come in and out of fashion like swings and roundabouts (remember Ty beanie babies) Some of the most popular collectable items will always be worth storing and continuing to increase in value.

Vinyl Records

Its amazing how Vinyl has come back! After making it though the cassette tape, minidisk and CD era it seems that music lovers around the world have have circled back around to the records that our parents used to listen to in the swinging 60s, 70s and 80s!

This amazing move makes vinyl records so much more valuable.

Of course many will only be worth what you paid for them now but the older, rare records can be worth a lot so storing your collection properly is a must!

You never know which record may all of a sudden have a spike in value.

1. Always clean your records before putting them away.

Get yourself a proper record cleaning brush. Your shirt or the rag on the counter defiantly will not do and will probably cause damage!

2. Always store records in their jackets.

As soon as you're done with your record, put it back in the jacket! the only time it should be out is when it is being played, that means no leaving it on the turntable either!

3. Never stack your records on top of each other always upright.

The weight of stacking records on top of each other can cause irreparable damage, cracks and scuffs to the vinyl. If you are storing them for a long time then make sure they are upright and use crate dividers to prevent them being stored on a slant.

4. Make sure you are handling and playing them properly.

Most importantly here, always pick up your record from the edges. And don't try to skip that song for the next one, placing the needle in a random spot can cause damage if it ends up in the wrong groove. Just start from the beginning and enjoy the music!

Comic Books

The humble comic book has been a collectors favourite for decades and there is no sign of that changing anytime soon.

The problem with comic books is that they can be fragile and even the smallest of damage or defect can have a catastrophic affect on its value. Of all the rare collectables that people are interested in, how comic books are stored is probably one of the most important aspects of maintaining their value.

Those not in the know would assume that comic books are there for reading and wrinkled page or tear is no big deal. But to an avid comic book collector that just isn't so! Main rule of thumb: sticky hands off!

1. Handle the Good Stuff with Care

Asses your collection and when you are preparing to handle your comic books make sure that you have washed your hands. Many collectors recommend wearing gloves when handling your collection.

2. Organise Your Comics

This step is a matter of personal preference but you can go by author, series, publisher or date, its really up to you. As for storage there are a few options here: Specialty Comic Boxes, Long Boxes, Short Boxes or Archival Storage Boxes

3. Long-term Comic Storage

You may have a few favourites that you want to keep out for display or to read but put the rest into long-term storage. It is recommended that you put 'bagged and boarded' comics into a cool dry place. if possible a climate controlled storage unit or well ventilated cupboard.

Dolls and Toys

Doll collectors take their passion seriously. If you’re into doll or toy collecting, chances are you own not just one or two pieces, but dozens or even hundreds.

Like many collectables, some toys and dolls will go in and out of fashion, like beanie babies. However, antique toys and dolls have a much more steady market, and storing these pieces well is of the utmost importance.

The list of do's and don'ts is pretty long when it comes to storing collectable toys and dolls and you should do your research if you plan to put these collectables on display or into long term storage.

1. Avoid exposure to both natural and fluorescent light.

2. No smoking as toys will absorb odours

3. Don't let dust accumulate

4. Avoid damage by keeping pets away

5. Beware of bugs and pests in long term storage

6. Always store your dolls in closed display cabinets

7. Avoid extreme temperatures of hot and cold

8. Don't store your dolls in sealed air tight plastic

Stamps

Stamp collecting seems like a pastime, for the older generations but there are still many stamp collectors out there. There may in fact be more stamp collectors in the world than any other collector in our list. S tamp collecting is for those with a love of history and of art. With each stamps the collector can learn an infinite amount about the country it came from and the social and political atmosphere at the time the stamp was created and used. Fascinating stuff!

Keep humidity levels between 35% and 55%

How much space do you need? Be Realistic!

Clean everything properly.

It may seem silly to clean something before you pack it away in a box for a long time, but this is an important step.

Making sure that items are well cleaned and completely dry before packing will prevent any nasty bugs and insects, issues with mould and damp or rotting from happening.

So, clean all your appliances, clothes, cars, utensils, shoes, furniture and everything else, completely drying them prior to storage to avoid any nasty surprises when you unpack those boxes a couple of years down the line.

Get quality storage boxes and packing

After you have cleaned everything and are ready to pack it up you should think about the best way to keep everything secure for a long period of time. Taking a little extra time and effort to pack cannot be emphasised enough.

We recommend using plastic storage boxes with sealable lids. This is a great way to create an air tight seal for your belongings for the entire time they are in storage. Plastic boxes also last for a lot longer and are much more durable than regular cardboard boxes. In case of an eventuality, plastic is much better at protecting your items from harsh weather elements. If you are storing big items such as furniture, cover them with plastic covers to keep dust away.

Make sure that any breakable items are well wrapped up to keep them secure and safe. When comes to packing and stacking your storage unit make sure that boxes are stacked properly and if possible try to keep items such as furniture off the floor.

Check in every now and then

We recommend that you try to check in on your storage unit regularly. If you are heading overseas and cant do this yourself you could have a friend or family member do this for you. Although most storage companies will have security measures in place such as CCTV and alarms, checking up on your unit every now and then ensures that if there are any problems they will be addressed quickly. Get ready to 'winterize' your fishing gear

The New Zealand fishing scene is a huge time of year for many kiwis and anglers who come from overseas who come to the southern hemisphere to escape the winter and enjoy their favourite hobby at the hight of New Zealand summer.

Some the best fishing and the greatest chances of catching that trophy trout that every angler dreams of is early on in the season between October and February. As March and April come around the weather starts to change and the fishing season starts to slow down, this is a great time to prepare your fishing gear for winter storage.

So if you have space at home or have a self storage unit for your hobbies here are some top tips for storing your boat and hanging up your hook this winter.

Storing your Fishing Equipment

1. Take your reels apart

You should Take your reels apart so you can clean, grease and oil them. Replace any gears or springs that are worn.

Also, clean and oil the reel handles and reel seat hardware. Making sure that all the moving parts are well oiled and lubricated is essential so they don't freeze up with corrosion.

2. Check the guides and winding wraps

Check your rod for worn guides and loose winding wraps. You should remove and replace any guides with nicks or grooves and if the wraps are loose or exposed, repair with a few wraps of winding thread and coat with rod spar varnish.

3. Use rod sleeves

When you disassemble your rods, make sure to store them using rod sleeves to keep tip and butt sections from becoming mismatched.

4. Store your rods vertically

Storing your rods vertically will avoid a set or bend. You should also make sure they are kept at room temperature. Storing them in a hot place can weaken the graphite or fiberglass.

5. Storing your waders

If you use waders, check them for leaks. Most leaks are easy to find, but pinhole leaks can be a challenge. An easy way to find a pinhole leak is with a torch and a pen. Go into a dark room or area and put the torch or light inside your waders. The light will shine through the pinhole. Circle any holes you find with the pen then you can patch them with a waterproof adhesive. To store them is is best to let dry, and hang waders in a cool, dry place.

6. Fishing Line

Examine monofilament and braided lines for wear, replace where necessary and store in loose coils. When cleaning your lines use dish detergent. For fly lines, make sure to remove the line from your reel and store in loose coils. This is important as f ly lines have memory and by storing them in loose coils they are less likely to kink and tangle in the spring.

7. Hooks and Lures

You should check and Replace or sharpen rusty or bent hooks and Replace all broken lures, necessary tools (like pliers or hook hones) and terminal tackle.

8. Fishing Knives

Filet knives get dull with lots of use. Use a 65-120 grit stone to sharpen the edge for next season. Clean, dry the knife then coat the blade with a light oil before storing for the winter.

Storing your Boat

1. The engine

Winterize your engine by running fogging oil through the cylinders. Change your spark plugs, water filter, and lower unit oil.

2. The gas tank

Before filling your tank, be sure to add gas stabiliser to avoid unwanted moisture while it is in storage

3.The Battery

Remove the battery from the boat and store it in a warm, dry place. When it comes to getting your boat out of storage int he spring you should trickle charge it.

4. Store your boat clean

Alway make sure that you thoroughly clean your boat before putting into storage and ensure that the interior compartments of are as dry as possible before putting its cover. If you don't have a cover, consider shrink-wrapping or using a closed storage unit.

5. The Outboards

Trim outboards down so all water can drain. If you remove your outboard attach it to a saw horse in the upright position (rather than laying on its side). Tune up inboards by replacing all fluids and sparkplugs and fill with antifreeze.

6.Trailer

If you store your boat on a trailer be sure to jack up the wheels and place a block under the axles prevent damage or misshapen tyres As rubber breaks down with repeated soakings and exposure to the sun and saltwater, consider replacing your tires every four to five years regardless of tread wear.

Pack your trailer hubs and your steering cable with grease so hubs and cables don't freeze up. Inspect any trailer leaf springs and U-bolts and change if they are corroded. Inspect all trailer lighting harnesses, brake light harnesses, and directionals to be sure your lighting system is intact.

7. Restock

Restock your first-aid kit, update flares, replace flashlight, life jackets and handheld marine radios if necessary. Replace sun screen and bug repellent, as well as any other items you've used during the season.

Self Storage 101: Things you can store and things that you cant.

Before you start filling up your storage unit there are a few things to know.

Renting a storage unit is a great way to cut down on the clutter in your home, pack away your fishing rods or surfboards for the winer or stash those outgrown baby clothes until you're ready for your next kid. Storage units can save time and space, giving you more of both. But before you pack away your prized possessions, it is important get familiar with your storage facility’s rules so you know what can and can’t sit in your unit.

Our customers often have a few questions about what types of items they can and cannot be put into storage. Although our self storage units are perfect solutions most things there are few items that for legal or safety reasons should never be stored in them.

To help answer some of the most common questions we get about the do's and don'ts of self storage we put together this list.

Things you CAN store

Seasonal Items:

From rolls of wrapping paper to fishing rods, there are many items that we only need at certain times of the year. Boxes of winter or summer clothes, sporting equipment such as skis, snowshoes, or surfboards, camping gear, holiday decorations are great items to store in a storage unit. Even equipment like leaf and snow blowers or lawnmowers are fine, as long as they are drained of fuel. Having these seasonal items out of the way the rest of the year means less stress and clutter.

Household goods:

Most household goods are acceptable for storage units.

Books, furniture, toys, clothes, linens, kitchen items and office supplies all of these make great use of storage space. Storing these during a move allows our customers to move at their own pace to unpack after a life transition.

Commercial goods

Storage rentals can take a lot of the stress out of any move—even for a business. Office furniture, supplies, equipment and decor are great items to store. Many product and service supplies can be safely stored, as well as shipping and packaging supplies. Storage units are also beneficial for storing file cabinets of paperwork that is not needed on a daily basis, but which can’t be discarded for record-keeping purposes.

Electronics

Most electronics are acceptable for storage rentals. This would include TVs, DVD or Blu Ray players, gaming systems, digital devices, stereo systems, and other computer equipment, like monitors and printers. Many of our customers prefer the security of our facilities for these valuable items. Note, however, that electronics fare best in climate-controlled environments.

Appliances:

Appliances can be stored as long as they are cleaned and dried prior to storage and are never left plugged in while being stored. This would include refrigerators, stoves, microwaves, washers, dryers, and freezers. Smaller appliances, such as toasters, coffee makers, vacuums, and paper shredders are also fine, as long as they are wiped clean of crumbs and dried on drips beforehand.

Cars, boats, motorcycles, and RVs

Most registered vehicles are fine to sit in storage—though some facilities also require that the vehicle is insured and operable. If you’re a car aficionado and need a home for your vintage 1970 Datsun 240Z, check your facility’s policy on non-operating vehicles.

Tires

If you have snow tires you swap for your standard tires in the winter, stash your extra set in storage when it’s not in use. Keep in mind: Most facilities won’t let you store more than four tires in your storage unit at a time. Tire recycling is pricey, so this rule exists in case you bail without claiming your belongings and the storage facility has to handle tire disposal on your behalf.

Alcohol

Stashing beer, wine, and spirits in a storage unit is completely acceptable. In fact, some facilities even specialize in wine storage and come with built-in wine racks and shelves. (Your storage unit is also a great place to hide your alcohol from your teenagers.)

Things you CAN'T store

Hazardous Materials

At the top of the list of unpermitted items is anything that can catch fire or explode. This category applies to anything toxic or hazardous, even biological waste, fertilizer, and asbestos. It also includes anything that is considered an illegal substance and anything radioactive.

Combustible and flammable items

Flammable items put your storage unit at risk of catching fire. If there’s a spike in temperature, combustible materials could explode. Here’s a full list of things to avoid:

Propane tanks
Aerosols (e.g., hairspray and cooking spray)
Jerry cans (fuel cans)
Gasoline or anything containing gasoline
Lighter fluid
Linseed oil
Paint
Explosives
Fireworks
Kerosene lamps

This may seem obvious, but garbage belongs in the dumpster. Trash attracts bugs and vermin—plus, it’ll stink up the place.

Weapons

In most cases, firearms and ammunition are not permissible in storage rentals. Specifics about these particular items can be obtained by contacting the storage company.

Perishables

This includes food items such as produce, meats, dairy, cereals, and rice. This also includes and animal products, such as pet food. These items can attract bugs and rodents, or encourage bacteria or mould.

Animals and Plants

Storage units are for non-living things. It is illegal for any person to reside in a storage rental, animals of any kind are forbidden, and even plants are not allowed. Nothing that requires light, food, and water to live can be kept in a storage unit.

Plants can’t survive without daily sunshine and regular water; they also attract insects and other pests and therefore aren’t allowed in storage. Gardeners, you can stow away your shovels, pots, and other tools in your unit, just not your live plants.

Don’t have enough space in your current pad for your turtle terrarium or 75-gallon fish tank? Thinking of setting it up in your storage unit instead? Think again. For ethical reasons, you aren’t allowed to leave pets in storage.

Scented or wet items

Steer clear of wet items, like an umbrella—they’re breeding grounds for mould, mildew, and bacteria. Also, be cautious of items with strong smells—these can attract insects and rodents and will probably make your storage neighbours unhappy, too.

Left is Right & Right is Left - How to reverse a trailer

So, you're moving into your new self storage unit and you've rented a trailer. . . Piece of cake or potential disaster?

For some people, reversing a car can sometimes be a stressful experience. So when you have something attached to the back of it, it can get even more confusing and frustrating. We often see people moving into their new storage units and running into some trouble so we thought we would bring you a top tips guide to backing up your trailer!

1 : Have a strategy!

It's important to understand that backing up a trailer requires preemptive motion of the towing vehicle to move the trailer in the correct direction.

Pre -plan your your route, keeping in mind the direction of the trailer, the direction of the towing vehicle, Be aware or any obstacles that may be in the path that your car or trailer will take.

2 : Practice makes perfect

If you have the opportunity and the space to do so then practice in an empty space such as a parking lot. Mark out where you want the trailer to end up (you could use orange cones, rope or existing road markings). Shorter/smaller trailers are a lot trickier to manoeuvre so try learning with a long trailer first, and then attempt a small trailer. Longer trailers are more forgiving of mistakes, but will take more work to get around a corner. And while you are learning, take it slow.

3 : Get a spotter

Having another pair of eyes at the back of the trailer can be a huge advantage as they will see things that the driver cant. With the right communication between you the spotter can stop any bumps or crashes while your reversing. You can even invest in a set of short-range 2-way radios. This will make communications a lot easier than yelling and/or trying to watch a spotter.

Depending on the size of your trailer the spotter needs to remember to look up! It's easy to become so preoccupied with obstacles on the ground that you forget to check overhead for tree limbs and wires.

4 : Set yourself up for the big finale!

Maker sure to adjust your wing mirrors so that you can see the trailer behind you.

Set yourself up so that you're backing up towards the drivers side of the vehicle. You will be able to see the trailer much better in your side mirrors and can also when you look over your shoulder. If you have to loop around the car lot or your self storage unit to approach the spot on your left side then do it!

Place your right hand on the bottom of the steering wheel (6 O-Clock position). That way when you’re ready to move you’ll simply move your hand in the direction that you want the rear of the trailer to go! Try it! If you use this hand position, it will all but eliminate turning the wheels the wrong way while backing up. Turn your body and head to look behind you and at your trailer.

3 : Its go time

When you are reversing a trailer or boat or caravan, there's one important rule of thumb: left is always right and right is always left. So, if you are looking toward the front of the vehicle turn the wheel to the right to make the trailer go left or turn left to make the trailer go right.

If however you have set yourself up properly, have your hand at the bottom of the steering wheel and are looking behind you then you'll have a much easier time!

The bottom of the steering wheel directs the trailer so depending on which way you want to reverse the trailer, bring that hand up. Facing backwards tends to help the backwards feel of steering the trailer.

If you have a spotter then make sure they are clear on what instructions you want. Be careful of using "left" and "right", as the spotter's left and right will vary depending on which way he's facing. Distinct directions such as "Towards me" and "Away from me", with hand gestures, are useful.

We know price is usually a big factor when i comes to self storage solutions so we have some quick tips to help you save money on storage.

1.

Declutter!

Before you start putting things into storage you should really think about if you want to keep it first! It's time to have an honest conversation with your self about that old DVD collection, stack of magazines or those old kitchen appliances that you never use anymore. You could even make a little money here by listing them for sale or just donate to charity. The less items you have to store, the less space you will need to rent!

2.

Can it be replaced?

Now that you have decluttered its time to look at what you have and decide Whether to Store It or Replace It Later.

If you are planning on storing items long term then storage of some of your larger items may not be cost effective. Instead of paying for a larger storage space would it be better to buy a replacement refrigerator later?

3.

Don't rent more than you need

Wherever possible you should aim to rent the Smallest Space you can. Our staff have a lot of experience with customers shifting households small and large. Talk to them for advice on the smallest space you will need to store your items.

4.

Stack it up!

You should try to make the most of your storage space by packing efficiently. It it's also worth using shelving in your unit to get the most of the space! It will save you money by letting you stack items to the ceiling. Just remember to keep your most used goods near the front where you can access them easily without needing to move things around too much.

5.

Review your options

There is nothing wrong with downsizing your storage. Circumstances change and often peoples storage needs change with them. You should r eview your storage needs regularly and if your unit is looking a little empty then maybe its time to ask about moving into a smaller storage unit.

Our top tips for putting your car into storage.

Summer in New Zealand is a fantastic time of year. Not just because the sun is shining and kiwis across the country are able to get their fix of holiday road trips and cooking every meal on the BBQ. Summer also also allows the classic car enthusiasts to get their cars out of storage and bring them back to life. New Zealand possibly has the largest number of 'classic' vehicles per capita in the world with hundreds of car clubs and festival taking place all across the country.

As we come to the tail end of summer we wanted to bring you some top tips for 'winteriszing' your car.

Before storage

Select a dry, dark location for storage — preferably with limited access. Concrete flooring is best at keeping away moisture. Getting yourself a self storage unit is a great option! If you don't have the garage space at home then Belfast Self Storage can offer a clean dry secure alternative.
If you must store your car on a dirt floor, place a plastic barrier under the vehicle, and place carpet pieces or plywood under the tires.
Give the vehicle a good wash/wax. Putting on and removing a vehicle cover will lead to unwanted scratches if the car is dirty.
Fill the fuel tank (preferably with premium) and add fuel stabiliser. Be sure to run the vehicle to move fuel stabiliser into the carburettor, fuel rails, injectors, etc. The fuller the tank, the less room there will be for air, which carries moisture that can lead to fuel contamination and possibly rust within the tank.
Change the oil and filter right before putting away the vehicle. The clean oil will reduce the risk of harmful contaminants working away at your engine during hibernation — and you’ll be ready to go in spring.
Check the antifreeze.
Add air to the tires.
If you're storing your car somewhere other than your home, some insurance companies require you to report the address of the offsite location. You should check with your insurer to determine your policy's requirements.

During storage

Place baking soda refrigerator packages in the interior and trunk areas.
To keep insects and vermin out of the car, put a plastic bag over the air cleaner/air inlet and exhaust pipe(s). You also can cover these with foil and tape securely.
Place mothballs in the tailpipe and around the outside of the car, or insert steel wool in the tailpipe.
Place the vehicle on jack stands. This step avoids tire flat spots and adds longevity to the suspension because it is not supporting the vehicle’s weight during storage.
For your battery, take one of the following actions: Unhook the battery by removing the negative cable first and store it separately — never on a concrete floor and preferably where it will not freeze; or leave the battery in the car and put a battery tender on it, if there is power available. That way if you want to start it a few times in the winter you don’t have to put the battery in and out.
Close all of the windows.
If the vehicle will be exposed to freezing temperatures, be certain no personal items that may freeze or burst are left in the vehicle.

Bringing your baby out of storage

Charge the battery for a solid 24 hours. When returning the battery to the vehicle remember to attach the positive cable first.
Once your car is uncovered, inspect it for any signs of insect or vermin damage.
Remove the baking soda units. If you forget them, they may spill during driving.
It’s a good idea to check for floor leaks, check all fluid levels, and check the tire pressures.
Remove plastic bag/foil from over air cleaner/air inlet and exhaust pipe(s).
Apply the brakes ensure they work and that you have a good pedal. The steel brake lines can rust out and leak, and vermin can chew through the rubber brake hoses.
Start the vehicle and check for any fluid leaks.
Give it some extra time to warm up, and check the lights, horn, etc., while the temperature begins to rise. Drive it slowly for a mile or so. Some components such as transmissions and rear-ends require movement for full/proper lubrication.
After driving a bit, check it again for leaks, etc.
Your car cover may have become dusty over the long winter months — give it a good cleaning according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Storing your vehicles at self storage facilities can be a really cost-effective way to keep them safe until you want to use them again. Space matters

So, you've decided that self storage is the way to go, now you will need to figure out how much space you'll need.

Understanding how large you will need your storage unit to be can be confusing especially if you are storing unusual items like a cars or stock for your business. Often talking to someone is the best way to get your questions answered. Location, location, location!

The next thing you'll need to consider is where your storage unit needs to be. If you are storing items for your home or business you will want to find a storage facility that is near by and convenient and easy to get to. Once you have decided on this then jump on google and jot down a list of storage units in that area.

The best way to narrow down your list is to get in touch with them! The staff are there to help and they are the best people to help you understand all things storage!

A few other things to think about

It can be tempting to choose your self storage based on price alone - don't worry we will cover this in our next post! - but there are a few other things that you should think about before making your final decision.

We have already covered location a bit however there are a few more things to think about here. As mentioned above, the location of your storage facility is important for home or business storage but here are some things you may not have thought about. What if you've decided to go travelling overseas for a while?

You will probably want to find a facility near friends or family who you can give access to your unit if you need to retrieve anything or there are any unforeseen issues. Are you arranging storage for your kids who are off to university and looking for a storage unit that they can access easily while away.

It is possible that your business storage is better located near to a major transport route that you use frequently. The reasons for needing self storage are endles and so are the things to think about when choosing the ideal location for this.

Making Packing a Little Easier

Use the following suggestions to help with the packing of your goods in order to maximise protection, reduce the chance of damage and create ease of handling.

What Sort of Boxes

Use boxes of good quality cardboard. They need to be strong to protect the contents and to allow stacking on top of each other. For your convenience we have a full selection of suitable boxes and packing materials available for you to purchase from all of our branches.

(Note: If you are moving overseas it is important NOT to use any fruit or produce boxes for your packing.)

What Size Boxes

If it fits inside a box then put in a carton. However using the right size box is very important, a simple rule of thumb is to pack light goods into large boxes and heavy goods into small boxes. Once a box is packed it should be able to be comfortably handled by one person. Following is a recommendation of the types of goods you should pack into the different size boxes.

Small Boxes Books, Files, CDs, DVDs, Food, Bathroom Items, Tools, etc.
Large Boxes Kitchenware, Glassware, China, Crystal, Ornaments, Toys & Games, Clothes & Shoes, Linen, Bedding, Sports Gear, etc

How Many Boxes

The object is to have the smallest possible number of packages so as to speed up the job. Lots of boxes and loose objects will slow down the removal process and increase the risk of damage.

How to Pack Boxes

Before putting goods into a box ensure that all open edges are taped up and secured.
When packing fragile items in a box place plenty of cushioning on the bottom, i.e. crushed paper or linen.
Wrap fragile items in several layers of paper/bubble wrap and pack firmly into box. Avoid using newsprint paper as this can leave marks on your goods.
Ensure all glassware, crockery, china, and crystal is packed standing up on its edge for maximum strength.
Try to avoid mixing up the contents in your boxes too much.
Don’t overload boxes, ensure you pack heavy items on the bottom and light items on top.
Pack items in layers with plenty of cushioning in between.
Leave room at the top of boxes for another layer of cushioning before closing.
Pictures and mirrors should be wrapped with paper/bubble wrap or linen and placed inside a cardboard sleeve made from a collapsed box of suitable size.
Tape up and secure all open edges.
Once closed mark the top of each box with a brief list of contents and the room it belongs in.
Sharp objects must be secured and not protruding.

General Tips

Ensure all contents are firmly packed and nothing protrudes above the top of the carton. Remember the boxes must be able to be stacked on top of each other without damaging the contents. And always give yourself plenty of time to pack, don’t leave things until the last minute.

How to pack a self storage unit

Hopefully these packing tips will help you pack your self storage unit efficiently.

Before you put your belongings into a self storage unit make a list or take photos of all of the items in the unlikely event that something happens to them whilst in storage and you need to make an insurance claim.

The list will also be good for reference if you need to remember if you put something into the unit or not.

Pack as much as you can in strong uniformed sized boxes as this will make stacking them easier allowing you to make the most of the vertical space. Boxes are available on our online storage box shop.

Be sure to clearly identify and label fragile goods, and make sure the labels can be easily seen.

Once you arrive at the storage facility unload your goods in the loading bay, and use the available trolleys to transport your goods to your unit. Be careful not to overload the trolley or stack them unsafely!

Identify your heaviest or fullest boxes, and put these with your bulky items in first. Set anything aside that you will need regular access to.

Position any items that you will need regular access to at the front of the unit. If you’re going to need regular access to most of the items in the unit you may want to leave an aisle.

Storing sofas and mattresses on end, and stacking chairs pad-to-pad, will help you to minimise the amount of space you need.

Stack your boxes, maximising your space, from the back of the unit and fill your space methodically towards the front – don’t forget to use single items for filling gaps as you go.

If possible raise boxes/items off the floor with wooden pallets.

Make the most of hollow spaces. Don’t leave wardrobes, chest of drawers, laundry baskets or suitcases empty. Fill those spaces with things such as clothing, linen or pillows.

Pay extra attention to sharp objects and take care to safely pack items with sharp edges or garden tools to avoid accidents. Outside equipment should be cleaned before storage, and lawnmower blades or cutting tools should be lightly oiled.

When all your items are in, cover it all with a dust sheet to keep them clean and protected.

Lastly invest in a quality padlock to keep your unit secure.

Label and pack like a pro

When packing your things make sure you think about what needs to go where in the unit.
Are you going to leave everything locked away entirely while it’s in storage or will you need access some things from time to time?

If so it’s a good idea to make sure you have a good labelling system and an organised plan of where you’re putting every item. As tedious as this may seem – you won’t regret it!

Pack heavier items at the bottom of boxes, heavier boxes at the bottom of piles and larger items at the back of your unit. You don’t want anything unstable falling on you and hurting you or damaging the contents and items around them. Don’t spare the packing paper, bubble wrap or foam peanuts. Having got this far you want to make sure everything stays as safe as can be in the boxes.

Make sure each box is labelled clearly with what’s inside – and which way up things need to be kept. Make sure you leave an alley through your boxes in the unit so you can get to it at all times and see where everything is without having to take all the boxes out. Smaller boxes are easier to handle as a general rule and don’t overfill them with heavy things or they’ll break as soon as you try and pick them up. So with heavy items like books – spread the load across a good few boxes and pack them with lighter things too.

Once you’ve planned and packed and everything is safely tucked away in your unit you’re free to go and live your life, knowing your treasured possessions are in the best possible place, ready for you to release them when the time comes!
